Mathematics

At Chatsmore, the Maths Department are committed to helping every child, regardless of their starting point, learn and succeed with mathematics. We have high expectations of all our students, and promote a positive attitude to mathematics. We share our enthusiasm for the mathematics, and guide our students to believe that they can achieve their best. We work with all subjects, developing numeracy across the curriculum, and help students to see that maths exists outside the maths classroom. We run trips, competitions and deliver whole day enrichment sessions. We build on what students have learned at Key Stage 2, teaching them to become fluent in the basics of mathematics; to reason mathematically by explaining their thinking; and to develop their problem solving skills.

At Key Stage 3 (Year 7 and 8), we follow the National Curriculum programme of study, and students develop their knowledge of Number; Algebra; Ratio and Proportion; Geometry and Measures; Probability and Statistics.

At Key Stage 4 (Year 9, 10 and 11), we follow the AQA 3 year linear programme of study for GCSE maths. There is also an opportunity for students to study Further Mathematics on an extra-curricular basis.

All students have the use of the Hegarty Maths platform to undergo homework or revision tasks. Whereby, every skill has a helper video and quiz, which measures effort levels of every child. Alongside maths lessons students in Years 7 to 10 carry out a ‘Numeracy Ninjas’ activity once a week during tutor time. To which the purpose is to sharpen up key maths skills to support their lessons.
